A stock Sur-Ron Light Bee feels sharp on day one. After a season on the trails — or a few supermoto sessions — most riders hit the same wall: the throttle is already pinned and the rear still will not drive the line you pictured. Climb, corner exit, throttle wheelie instead of a yank — the factory controller simply runs out of headroom.

It is not the frame. It is the electronics ceiling. The OEM setup protects the battery, the motor and the average rider. You want to ride harder — and then the question we hear most in the shop lands: TC500 or TC1000?

Below, no brochure fog: what TORP actually changes, how the power classes differ, how to pair TM25 / TM40, and how to choose for trail / street-ish / race-ish riding — legally, sensibly, without buying twice.

Where the stock Light Bee hits its ceiling

On the stock pack the BMS caps current. That is why you see the familiar ~4.8 kW from the factory controller — no matter how hard the right hand feels. Add a soft throttle map, thermal cutbacks and almost no real regen control.

Who feels it first?

  • trail / enduro: corner exits and short climbs where stock goes soft
  • stunt / wheelie: throttle is not linear enough to hold balance cleanly
  • supermoto / street-ish: no spare when you need a clean pull (where that is legal and private)

The first move in a Light Bee power path is almost always the controller. You swap the motor when the stock unit starts cooking — or when you deliberately build a higher power tier.

What TORP changes in the real world

TORP TC500 2.X and TC1000 2.X are full FOC (field-oriented control) units, pre-configured for the Light Bee: harness, cover, grease, hardware, tools. The map is loaded — fit it, pair the app, ride. Bench calibration from scratch is not required.

Controller role: it decides how much current reaches the motor at any moment. It does not invent horsepower — it unlocks what the battery and motor can actually deliver.

App (iOS / Android): power maps, throttle response, ride modes, regen — change them trailside in seconds. No laptop ritual in the garage.

Regen: real, configurable engine braking instead of “whatever the stock map gives you”. Dialled in, you heat the pads less and enter corners cleaner.

Maps / modes: one setup for trail, one for stunt, one “economy” for the commute home — without digging into firmware.

Stock display and BMS: stay. TORP talks to the original BMS and drives the factory Sur-Ron display. Want live controller data (temps, power, maps on the bars)? Add a TORP Full-Color display and, optionally, a thumb throttle for regen — short notes below.

TC500 vs TC1000 — an honest comparison

The line riders need to hear first: on a stock battery and stock motor, TC500 and TC1000 feel about the same on peak power — because the BMS is the limit, not the controller. The class gap shows up when you move to a stronger pack and/or a TORP motor.

Takeaway: if you stay on the stock motor and stock (or mildly upgraded) battery — TC500 is the right buy. Take the TC1000 when you are deliberately building toward a TM40 and a stronger pack, or when you refuse to pay twice at the next step.

Decision tree: trail / street-ish / race-ish

No claims about “street-legal power” on public roads. A stronger setup means you own homologation, insurance and where you ride. This is build logic — not a how-to for breaking rules.

1) Trail / woods / enduro vibe

You want throttle that answers, climb reserve and electronics that survive a full session.

  • Start: TC500 Light Bee kit + stock motor
  • Sweet spot: TC500 + TM25
  • TC1000 only if you already know TM40 + custom battery is next

2) Street-ish / supermoto (private land, track, legal commuting)

Linear throttle, clean exits, controlled regen.

  • TC500 + good app maps covers most riders
  • If you run long high-power sessions — bring TM25 sooner (stock motors hate heat)
  • Reinforced drive belt almost immediately — that is what fails first when torque jumps

3) Race-ish / max build / track day

Full sessions without thermal cutback and headroom for a bigger pack.

  • Go straight to the TC1000 Light Bee kit
  • Target: TM40 (catalogue peak 42 kW, ~93 Nm — torque version)
  • Custom 72–80 V, cooling, guards, belt — the whole chain, not just the controller

Shop rule of thumb: not sure you will build max this season → TC500. TM40 already on the list → TC1000, so you are not selling the TC500 in six months.

Supporting parts that actually matter

Short — no cart padding.

TORP Full-Color 2″ IPS display The stock screen stays, but TORP shows live what you are riding: power, temps, maps. On 2.X you also get the hardware path for stability / wheelie control (TORP enables via updates; TORP display required). Useful on trail and when dialling maps.

TORP thumb throttle (regen) Finer regen control from the thumb. Especially useful when you ride hard downhill and want less rear-brake drama.

Controller shield / TORP bash plate The controller lives under the bike. A shield and a proper plate protect what you just paid for.

Reinforced belt Worth repeating: more torque eats a stock belt fast. Change it when you fit the controller — not in the woods.

The kits covered here are pre-configured for Sur-Ron Light Bee (X / L1E). Different harness = different kit.

  • Light Bee → TC500 or TC1000
  • Ultra Bee uses a separate TC1000 kit (different configuration) — do not mix photos / harnesses across models
  • Talaria = different kits again

Install is reversible: you can return to stock. No “cut the loom and hope” — the kit is plug-oriented.

Practical note: after a power jump, check bearings, swingarm, fasteners, cooling. Power does not fix loose hardware.
