Ceramic pads Sur-Ron Light Bee: fade & when to swap

You know the moment: long descent after a hard session, you pull the lever — and it goes soft, like the pads took a break mid-corner. Or after a TORP power bump: throttle is sharp, brakes are still stock. Instant torque + repeated heat = organic pads cook faster than most riders expect.

Not a frame problem. It’s the usual ceiling of bike-derived brakes on an e-moto. Below, no fluff: when to replace, what ceramic #118 actually changes vs stock, and when a 220 mm disc is the next step.

---

Why e-moto pads die fast

Sur-Ron Light Bee (and related platforms) run brakes born in the bicycle world: small rotors, small calipers, limited cooling. Electric motors deliver torque immediately — no “spooling up”. Result:

  • repeated downhill braking piles heat that organic pads don’t shed well,
  • after a few hard sessions you get brake fade — soft lever, unpredictable bite,
  • more power (e.g. after TORP) = more energy to scrub = stock pads wear faster.

The first cheap win in the brake system is pads — before you jump to a bigger disc.

More on Light Bee wear items: parts that wear fastest and when to replace them (PL slug; EN prefix if live).

When to replace pads

Don’t wait until metal-on-metal eats the disc. Typical cues:

  • lever feel — longer travel, soft bite, no confident stop late in a descent,
  • noise — squeal, grinding, metallic sound under braking,
  • pad thickness — under hard use, check about every 500 km; when friction material is around ~1.5 mm, plan the swap (cue from our wear-parts post),
  • riding on metal — kills the rotor; pads + disc costs more than one pad set.

Just added power? Check brakes earlier — not “when the season ends”.

Ceramic vs stock organic — what #118 actually changes

96 Power Parts ceramic pads (#118) use a Ceramic compound, bolt-on for front and rear — no mods.

From the listing (no invented numbers):

  • better fade resistance,
  • more consistent bite and precise modulation,
  • less dust, quieter vs typical stock organic,
  • longer life vs stock organic,
  • works with thicker ~200 mm rotors and bigger 220 mm discs.

Public PL list price is about 65 PLN per set — soft mention, no pressure. One set on the bike + one in the toolbox is a habit, not an upsell.

Fitment — no guessing

#118 fits:

  • Sur-Ron Light Bee / Light Bee X
  • 79Bike Falcon / Falcon Pro
  • E-Ride Pro SS 2.0

Position: front and rear (same set for both calipers).

Platform notes (short):

  • Talaria MX5 — different pad (semi-metallic #309); ceramic #118 is not the main MX5 fit.
  • Ultra Bee — separate platform (e.g. pads #101); don’t mix with Light Bee.
  • Segway — out of scope for this post.

Install: direct bolt-on. Box contents: 1 set of ceramic pads. Retaining pins are not included — reuse the pins from the caliper.

Bedding — 8–10 progressive stops before hard riding

New pads need to mate with the rotor. Product protocol:

  1. 8–10 progressive stops from moderate speed,
  2. no full panic grab on cold pads,
  3. then hard riding / long descents.

Bad bedding = glassing, squeal, weird bite — usually install, not compound.

Upgrade path: pads → 220 → (optional) 250

1) Ceramic pads alone

Fastest, cheapest jump: stock rotor + #118. Often enough for trail / street-ish after TORP if the disc is still healthy.

2) Pads + 220 mm disc + adapter

More surface, better heat and leverage. Soft-sell:

Context on sizes: 203 vs 220 vs 250 mm.

3) 250 mm — next level, not the default

A 250 mm front disc only makes sense with upgraded forks (Fastace / Rfloxa) or the right adapter — stock forks lack clearance / mount. We don’t oversell 250 as step one.

Soft CTA — 96 Power Parts Wrocław

If the lever goes soft mid-descent or you just added power — start with pads. Ceramic #118 is bolt-on, bedding in 8–10 stops, fitment Light Bee / 79Bike Falcon / E-Ride Pro SS 2.0.

We’re 96 Power Parts in Wrocław: stock on the shelf, EU shipping. Not sure pads vs 220? Message us — we ride these bikes, we don’t only pack them.

Garage tip: keep a spare #118 set in the box — a trailside swap is cheaper than limping home on a scored disc.
