Sur-Ron Light Bee X tuning: the complete guide

The Sur-Ron Light Bee X changed the electric off-road market. It's light, agile and genuinely fun. But every owner reaches the same conclusion sooner or later: I want more. More power, more grip, a better riding position and — above all — brakes that keep up. Here's where to start and in what order, so you don't burn the budget on upgrades that change very little.

1. Power: controller and battery

A stock Sur-Ron performs decently, but the real fun starts once you unlock its electric heart. The factory controller is the bottleneck of the whole system.

Controller upgrade

This is the most popular modification and usually the first one worth doing. A modern controller lets you fine-tune throttle response and raise both torque and top speed. The Light Bee X simply gets more aggressive off-road — and, more importantly, predictable where the stock unit used to stumble on a fast throttle opening.

60V or 72V battery

If you're going further with the build, a battery upgrade is worth considering. Higher voltage means more range, but mostly it means a clear jump in power — climbs that used to end in an overheat stop being a problem. What matters most, though, isn't the voltage number: it's the maximum current the pack can deliver.

2. Suspension and wheels

Power still has to reach the ground. The stock Sur-Ron suspension is often too soft for heavier riders and for aggressive jumping — it's usually the first thing that starts to annoy you after a controller upgrade.

Fork and shock

Swapping the front fork for a motocross or high-end MTB unit is a change you feel on the first descent. A stiffer setup means better traction, more confident landings and less fatigue on a long ride.

Wheels and tyres

Factory tyres run out of ideas quickly in deep mud and sand. A wider tyre with an aggressive tread is the baseline. More and more riders also change wheel size — a 16/19-inch setup improves the geometry for enduro use and leaves room for a serious tyre.

3. Ergonomics: fit the bike to you

A stock Sur-Ron is fairly small and simply doesn't fit taller riders. A few cheap changes can improve comfort more than many expensive upgrades:

• Riser bar — a more upright standing position, which is the key to technical terrain.
• Lowered footpegs — more legroom and a lower rider centre of gravity.
• Wider footpegs — a stable platform for your boot, even in mud.

4. Brakes are not an accessory

After a controller upgrade the stock brakes stop keeping up — they overheat under hard riding and the lever goes soft on a long descent. On a modified Sur-Ron an oversized rotor (220 mm or 250 mm) in a thicker spec is mandatory, not decoration.

5. Protection and looks

Your Sur-Ron doesn't have to look like everyone else's — but first of all it has to survive the season.

• Motor and frame guards — protection from rocks and branches, and the bike gains some visual mass.
• Anodised details — bolts, levers, stem. Cheap, and it changes the whole character of the machine.
• CNC reinforced parts — wherever cast components crack under load.

The order to do it in

1. Brakes and tyres — before you add power, make sure you can stop and that you have grip.
2. Controller — the biggest jump in feel for the money.
3. Suspension — once the power starts overwhelming the stock forks.
4. Ergonomics — cheap, and the bike rides like a different machine.
5. Battery — last, when the rest of the system is ready for more current.
